Recovery After Pickup Basketball — What Actually Works | Built to Hoop
Recovery · Pickup

Recovery After Pickup Basketball.

If Sunday pickup ruins your Monday — your recovery game is the issue, not your training. Here's the recovery protocol that actually works for adult hoopers.

Why Pickup Recovery Is Different

Pickup isn't a planned workout. It's high-volume, high-impact, unpredictable, and emotionally engaged — meaning you push harder than you would in any structured session. Your body has to recover from a stimulus you didn't program for.

Most adult hoopers recover from pickup like they would from a normal lift. That's why their next workout suffers and why the day-after stiffness keeps showing up.

The Truth
"You can't recover from pickup with a Monday "leg day" the day after. The math doesn't work."

What Actually Works

1. Active recovery within 24 hours. 20–30 min walk, light bike, swim, or yoga. Not a workout. Just blood flow. Pumps the inflammation out of the legs faster than rest.

2. Sleep — the day OF, more than the day after. Recovery happens during the first deep sleep block after the activity. Get 8 hours the night of pickup, not the night after.

3. Protein within 60 minutes of getting home. 30g, real food. Not a perfect ratio. Just protein. Most hoopers eat dinner 3 hours post-pickup and miss the window.

4. Heat or contrast. Hot shower, sauna if you have one, or contrast (hot then cold). Helps the nervous system come down so you can sleep deeper.

5. Skip the Monday lift. Or at minimum, lift upper body Monday and lower body Wednesday. The legs need 48 hours, not 24.

What Doesn't Work as Much as People Think

Cold plunges. Hyped, marginal effect. Won't fix actual structural issues.

BCAAs and recovery powders. Negligible if you're already eating enough protein.

Foam rolling 30 minutes. 5 minutes is fine. 30 is theater.

Massage guns. Feel good. Don't materially change your Tuesday.
